Do you stop changing the batteries of a clock after it stops working? After buying a bicycle do you stop oiling the chains or stop filling the air in the tires? After buying a new car, do you never change the oil? You won’t only if you don’t want it to last long and that’s the case with everything.
That doesn’t make your laptop any different, even if it is one of the best laptop under 30000. You have to take care of it and just like any other device. There are somethings that you expected to do regularly if you want it to work efficiently for long. Here are some things you could do that would help extend the life of your laptop by years even!
Keep up with the Times.
It is important to make sure your operating systems, apps and virus protection is always updated. Yes, even though the thought of it makes it seem so inconvenient especially since you’re so used to clicking on later it is something that you should do. Maybe even set it to auto-update all your apps. That way you won’t even have to give it a thought, and the job will still get done.
Don’t let Communists in the Fun House.
Of course, you know this isn’t literal, but the point is conveyed. Ensure you have a reliable anti-virus installed. You don’t want your laptop getting corrupt. You won’t even realise when your laptop goes for a toss, and by the time you do realise it, it may be too late. That just isn’t a chance worth taking.
Spruce it up.
Keep it clean. Yes, you read that right. Don’t get it soiled. Keep it away from water. Don’t get hair in it. Try not to spill your coffee on it while reading or working on it. Avoid dropping your popcorn all over it while binge-watching your favorite new series.
But we aren’t perfect so if and when you do drop something on it or cause some damage somehow, get it cleaned immediately. Do not wait for it to get worse! These aren’t helpful in anyway whatsoever, but it starts creating problems and ends up being harmful when they start preventing the fan from doing its job.
Give it a good ride.
Come on. It’s your baby! Make sure it’s comfortable. Don’t let it take punches and blows. Carry a proper bag for it, preferably padded. Don’t bang the laptop or the keys or anything on it either even if it’s a really ‘tough’ laptop or you’re just having a hard day at work, and you’ve decided to vent it on your keys by hitting them. Do yourself a favour and don’t do that. You’ll end up damaging the laptop, and that isn’t helping anybody.
Stay on the lookout.
This isn’t an ideal world. Even if you do your best and treat it with all the love, you have to offer there are still going to be days when things won’t go the way they are supposed to. Someone else may drop their milkshake even though you tried hard not to let the coffee spill on the laptop and let it spill on your new shirt instead. That doesn’t mean you stop rectifying mistakes. Is it running slowly all of a sudden? Get it checked. These problems won’t fix themselves. Don’t let it build up.
Out with the Old, In with the New.
Get rid of all the things that are just lying in your laptop, occupying space. Especially if you notice your device running slowly. Delete all the apps, folders, files that you no longer use. If your laptop has a hard drive and not a solid state drive (SSD), keep it performing at its most efficient by defragmenting at least once a month. When your computer has fewer items to run through, more RAM to work with, there’s a much lesser strain on the parts and thus helping your laptop last longer.
Keep it cool.
Don’t let your laptop overheat. There’s a reason the data centres are kept so uncomfortably chilly. Don’t let sunlight contribute to the overheating either. If you have a choice, work in the shade. Overheating reduces the lifespan of a laptop drastically. Remember to keep it cool. Avoid using it for hours at a stretch.
Yes! Don’t leave this one out. You have to treat this with care too. Don’t just throw it around and leave it anywhere. We’re always shoving it into the bag or pulling it out from underneath something and end up damaging it in the process. But the joints and connectors can be easily damaged! It’ll take you just one massive power surge to understand why it’s so important to take care of your cords too.
The Start and Finish.
Now, this may not seem like a very big deal, but it will go a long way. Make sure you shut down your laptop properly. Even if you are in a hurry. By not doing so, repeatedly, the software will get corrupt, and you may require to reload it again. Not just that, you even run the risk of losing all your data! And all that just because you didn’t take those few extra seconds to get the job done properly. Did you have something significant to gain from those few seconds? I don’t think so.
These steps are simple and don’t require you to do a lot. This is just basic maintenance, you taking care of something that is valuable to you. It doesn’t require you to go out of the way to do it. But inculcating these good habits will go a long way and thereby giving your laptop a long life. Maybe you won’t start doing these things immediately, but when you do, you’ll realise it was all worth the time and effort.
