Just like our rooms, we are too lazy to clean up and declutter our computer. When we talk about computers, it’s absolutely necessary when your computer runs out of space completely, when you can’t even download a single picture.
7 Tips to Free up Space in Your Computer
1. Clear Your Trash
The first and the most basic step is to clear out your trash. When you delete files and folders, they all end up in your trash folders, which you tend not to clear out. Deleting all the files and folders might or might not help. It depends on how many gigabytes of data you have there.
2. Clear Your Downloads Folder
Your downloads folder can have a crazy amount of data. Downloads folder is not something you visit often, so when you do visit the folder, you might be shocked by the number of things in the folder. Music that you downloaded three years ago, a PDF file you downloaded, all the apps, folders, files, images and videos you have downloaded, are present in this folder.
You can either delete them all at once, or you can sift through them and delete the ones you no longer need or require. If you delete them all, it can save you a lot of space, maybe even enough that you won’t have to delete anything else from your computer. If you hand pick the ones you want to delete, make sure that you delete a lot so that it can save a considerable amount of place.
3. Get Rid if One-Time Files
One time files take up an unexpectedly large amount of disk space. Files are big in general and take up a lot of space because people consider their computers to be multi-purpose, with graphics, videos, and music files.
Such files are found all over your hard drive, especially your media galleries. When you look through them, you’ll realize that you don’t need most of these files, photos, videos, documents, films, and music albums.
4. Delete Temporary Files
Temporary files include shortcuts to web pages, files saved by apps like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, cookies, caches, and internet search history. You can delete all these useless files from your browser or a third party app, like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.
5. Delete Duplicate Files
The accumulation of duplicate files of your computer is, to some extent, inevitable. They take up unnecessary space.
You might have to use a third-party application to detect and delete these duplicate files from your computer. Duplicate Sweeper is a good app for this purpose. It automatically detects the duplicate files, using your preferences, or you can also manually select the files.
If you have an Apple computer, you should delete duplicate tunes from iTunes. Tune Sweeper is an application you can download to quickly search your music library for duplicates and select which ones to remove, based on factors like best quality, longest duration, or most played.
6. Store Your Data Elsewhere
There might be some files and folders which are just too precious to be deleted but are taking up a lot of space in your computer’s hard drive. You can transfer this data to external storage or even better, the Cloud. These are the two platforms for storing data, physical storage, and cloud storage.
Physical storage is usually in the form of USBs, pen drives, and hard disks. So, by transferring your data from your computer’s hard drive to an external one, you empty up a lot of space in your computer, while keeping your important files safe.
Cloud storage is an even better way of storing your important data. You store your files on a remote server and access it via the Internet. You can either use Apple iCloud or Microsoft OneDrive.
7. Consider Upgrading the RAM
RAM is hardware in the computer which stores data frequently used by you and improves the speed of your computer. However, if your RAM is insufficient, the data automatically gets stored in your PC’s hard drive. When your computer attempts to read or write this data, it becomes a much slower process. So, it is important for you to have a sufficient RAM.
Ideally, you should never use up all the space in your computer because cleaning up space can become a difficult task. However, if you want to avoid deleting files, you can buy external hard disks to prevent this problem from arising again
