As they say, every system is unique and so is every product. Loads of technologies, loaded with tens of brands, that’s the least you can say about water purifiers in the current market. They possess different types of purification systems viz. RO, UF, UV, TDS and many times a combination of them.
But we need to look deep into these systems because when it emanates to drinking water, we need to be utmost careful while choosing the best water purifier, irrespective of the bulk volume, popularity and difficulty in installing the purifier.
And for that matter, we must understand what are the different technologies based on which these small appliances work, how they make the water drinkable and how they deliver.
Here is the brief about every system and how they differ:
1. RO Full Form and Meaning
RO stands for Reverse Osmosis and has several layers (steps) of purification. RO is generally preferred if your locality delivers water having more minerals. Moreover, it has an inbuilt system of taking out TDS (Total Dissolved Salts) out of the equation.
Obviously, RO purifier works on revere osmosis phenomena and takes water from higher concentration to lower concentration while continuously taking out TDS and various minerals. We all know how osmosis works. Similarly is reverse osmosis.
This kind of system utilizes hydrostatic pressure to push water across the membrane. And in doing that, impurities and other minerals are left out, which is after all desired. RO are the most famous type of purifiers for this reason that the extent and effectiveness of purification in this system is very favorable to almost all the situations.
2. UF Full Form Form and Meaning
UF stands for ultrafiltration membrane which is quite similar to RO systems, its only the size of the pores that differs. UF purifiers can remove almost all kinds of microorganisms, viruses and bacterias, irrespective of their size. The biggest advantage of using this purifier is the zero power requirement. It works well without electricity.
Should be the ideal peak in urban areas where you are unlikely to get solids dissolved in water, but mostly with lots of bacteria and viruses. Another aspect in favor of this is the working period. With proper maintenance, it works well for about ten years, without much trouble.
This filter works efficiently even in turbid water. So, almost zero working and maintenance cost and purifier as good as RO, is what UF purifier system is all about.
3. UV Full Form and Meaning
Probably the easiest one to understand. UV stands for Ulta violent. UV purifiers use their rays in the spectrum to destroy the DNAs of micro organisms. But as we know, the simple, the better and effective. This system kills about 99.99% of the different viruses and organisms present in the water.
It basically kills bacteria, viruses, and minerals by using strong UV rays, capable of some serious destruction of above-mentioned ones.
Major thing which talks a lot about this system is that almost all the water born diseases and be identified and taken care by UV rays. Another property of this is the eco-friendly way! No chemicals involved and just complete task.
Relatively quick it is, power consumption is also only about 5% of that in RO systems. Also, it is the process with minimum wastage of water among all present and also has low maintenance cost. So, a better option in rural areas.
4. TDS Full Form and Meaning
Not a system though, but capable of affecting any system, that’s how these dissolved solids are. The water source can be anything under or above the ground and this is where the trouble occurs. Your drinking water can always contain the outputs from factories, hospitals and other bodies.
Total dissolved solids have a separate system to get removed in each of the above purifiers since their presence can straight lead to diseases and system failure.
Measured in mg/l or parts per million, their occurrence should be limited to the specified number or otherwise severe failures are on their way. To have the best filtration and purification, most of the water purifiers come with ro+uv+uf+tds technology.
This was all about the different kinds of purifier systems and their working. Now depending on your requirement, desired water quality and budget, you should be buying a proper product, preferably from a quality brand to get sure about everything.
And lastly, never compromise on the health for a small price difference. Be an informed consumer and get the best product.
